Get ready for your driving test

Taking an accurate and full-length driving mock test will help give you confidence for the real test and identify areas of your driving that need improvement. The DVSA say it is one of the best ways to prepare for the real test. 

Why choose a mock test with me?

Realistic simulation

Having sat in on hundreds of real driving tests, I am able to recreate the same conditions as the real test but with none of the stress. I will be dressed like an examiner, the route we use is in the same area as real tests, I will be using the same script as an examiner, and we will do all the same manoeuvres and exercises you can expect on the day. I will also be using the same form examiners use for marking.

Expertly delivered feedback

Unlike the real driving tests, a mock test with me include detailed, in-depth feedback. You will get around 15-20 minutes of feedback, whereas the real driving test only has around 3 minutes allocated for this. My feedback is always given in a way which will help you to make a plan to go forward and pass the real test. 

Watch it back afterwards

At the end of the drive, you can watch back key moments from the test while the feedback is given  with the help of the HD dashcam. Don't worry if you're camera shy, no recording happens inside the car. This can be very useful as the test is around 40 minutes long so you might have forgotten exactly what happened at the start of the test!

Pricing

The charge for my mock test is £62. This fee also includes the use of a test vehicle so you do not have to supply your own (though you are welcome to use your own vehicle if you would prefer). 

What happens on the day of the mock test? 

You will meet me at your selected location, either in Central Liverpool or Liverpool South Parkway railway station. If you have an accompanying driver with you, they can sit in the back of the car or wait at a nearby cafe. We will have a conversation about what you hope to get from the mock test, then after an eye sight check you will be handed the keys to the test vehicle or can jump back into your own car. At this point, I will put on a high-vis examiner jacket and the mock test will begin. 

The test will be about 40 minutes long and involve the following: 

  • Independent driving using the satnav or following signs
  • A good variety of roads, including different speed limits, dual carriageways, and both busy and quiet roads 
  • One manoeuvre, either a forward bay park and reversing out, a parallel park, reversing on the right, or reversing into a bay
  • Two vehicle safety questions ("show me, tell me questions")
  • An emergency stop (if you would like one to be included - this is optional) 
  • Parking on the left at least three times

At the end of the test you will be given detailed feedback, as well as being told how the examiner marked the test. 

Top tips to pass a driving test

Remember, it is a test of safety

The driving test is a test of safety. If you are safe and legal for 40 minutes you will pass. If you keep that in mind, you are much more likely to have success on the day. The examiners are not looking for a "perfect" drive, just a drive that proves you are good enough to drive on your own. Don't dwell on small mistakes or exaggerate your mirror checks or any actions just so the examiner can see it. Just live in the moment and keep everyone around you safe. 

Double check those junctions! 

A quick glance at the giveway line will not be enough for you to see that cyclist dressed all in black without a light on, or that small car travelling very fast from behind that parked van! A very common thing that is said after a collision is "I didnt see you coming". Make sure you are looking properly, taking your time, and double checking. 

Give those parked cars plenty of space! 

You need to have strategies in place to ensure you're never closer to a parked car than a doors' width. This is incase someone opens the door from the inside without looking, or someone crosses the road between two parked cars. Hold back before entering situations that are too narrow for you and the oncoming vehicle. You could also change into the second lane, then return to the left after the parked car. Having excellent anticipation and control over your steering and your speed is essential here! 

Be careful before moving the car away

A common mistake is the very first thing you need to do, which is to move away safely from being parked. My top tip is to wait until there is no traffic around before starting! Make sure you have checked your mirrors for traffic or other road users, and don't forget that final check in your car's blind spot. This is usually out the side window, behind the door pillar. Breathe, and take your time before you start. There is no rush and no time limit on how long this can take.
